Snippet Sunday - The Navy's Ghost - Sleeping Beauty

Welcome to the Snippet Sunday on the Weird, the Wild, and the Wicked. Thank you so much for visiting. If you choose to comment today, I really appreciate it. The snippets are from my latest release, The Navy's Ghost, a military romantic suspense, though I call it my Menage a'SEALs. No paranormal critters in this one, though there's plenty of kick-ass adventure and hot sex. Just to be clear, this is a M/F/M erotic romance. You can read last week's snippet HERE.

Chief Warrant Officer Todd Hunter came to check on Ensign Christiana "Ghost" Brickman in the hospital. He'd saved her from a deadly wound, but the damage he'd inflicted in the effort was extreme. He's in her room checking her chart and trying to ignore the guilt.

The doc had increased her calcium intake for bone replacement, and protein for muscle and soft tissue development. Progress read ‘satisfactory.’
Todd snorted. “Not satisfactory for me…or Ghost, I’d bet.”
The sound of his voice in the quiet room made Chris shift and she turned her head toward him. Magic dropped the chart and snagged the nearest chair, dragging it over to the bed.
“Hey, Chris, how are you doing?”
“Magic? What are you doing here?”
“Checking on you.” He grabbed her hand and sat down. “How are you holding up?”
“I’m good.” She shifted in the bed, a grimace tightening her lips as she resettled. He didn’t believe her, but he decided not to push. “The meds make me groggy and sleepy, but the pain’s minimal.” She fixed him with her unfocused hazel gaze. If he didn’t know better he’d swear she gave him her bedroom eyes.
Sleepy beauty. His lips quirked. Yeah, but don’t kiss her to wake her up. He’d find himself on his back with a knife at his throat and a rabid weasel on his chest.
“What are you smiling at, Magic?” Even drugged up, Chris still managed to raise an eyebrow.
“I was just thinkin’ you look like hell, but could still kick my ass.”

Sounds like Ghost has earned her place in his heart. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writing Warrior list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Anastasia Vitsky, SJ Maylee, Gem Sivad, Goran Zidar, Zee Monodee, Veronica Scott, and Karla Doyle.

If you're interested in more from The Navy's Ghost, here's the blurb:

A SEAL is strongest with her Team…

Ensign Christiana "Ghost" Brickman is the only female SEAL to survive BUD/S training, a real Navy Jane. But when an ambush ends her career as an active SEAL, she’s free to pursue other interests. Like her two best friends Lt. Jim "Retro" Waters and Chief Warrant Officer Todd "Magic" Hunter. She's wanted them for over a year, but never dared to approach them while in the squad.

Retro has fought his dark desires since high school, certain the need to share a woman unnatural. Magic had never considered sharing before Ghost mentions it, but it solves his dilemma of choosing between his best friend and his woman. But Retro balks at Ghost’s offer to share and retreats from both when she marries Magic.

Everyone feels Retro’s loss, but he ignores the ache of their broken connection in favor of living ‘normal.’ When Ghost and the other wives of Beta Squad are kidnapped, Retro must reevaluate how much both Ghost and Magic mean to him. And he must decide how far he's willing to go to save the woman he loves, before she becomes the Navy's ghost.

It's available now at Smashwords, Amazon, All Romance eBooks, Kobo Books, and Barnes&Noble. Thanks so much for stopping by and happy reading. :)

Snippet Sunday - The Navy's Ghost - She survived, right?

Welcome to the Snippet Sunday on the Weird, the Wild, and the Wicked. Thank you so much for visiting. If you choose to comment today, I really appreciate it. The snippets are from my latest release, The Navy's Ghost, a military romantic suspense, though I call it my Menage a'SEALs. No paranormal critters in this one, though there's plenty of kick-ass adventure and hot sex. Just to be clear, this is a M/F/M erotic romance. You can read last year's snippet HERE.

Chief Warrant Officer Todd Hunter is in love with Ensign Christiana "Ghost" Brickman, even if she is a Navy SEAL and part of his squad. He'd saved her from a deadly wound, but he hasn't seen her for a few days, and doubts have crept in.

Todd “Magic” Hunter lengthened his strides down the hallway of Coronado Medical Center, searching for the nurse’s station. His gut clenched tight and he told himself for the hundredth time Ghost survived. Dammit, if the stupid doctors lost her after he’d managed to clamp her artery shut, he’d tear this place apart.
Breathe, jackass. Fury’s not gonna solve this.
The hospital’s halls sat relatively quiet and vacant in the after-dinner hour and Magic searched for the nurse’s station. No one appeared to be anywhere.
“Where are the fucking nurses?” Todd swung his gaze around the hallway, but no one materialized. He scanned the walls for the nurse rotation board behind the desk and found Brickman listed beside a nurse’s name and the number fifteen. He could almost hear CPO “Rimshot” Stanton’s voice whispering “Target acquired.”
Some of Magic’s tension faded as he approached Ghost’s room. She’d been moved out of the ICU into the main portion of the medical center. Means she’s out of immediate danger. When he reached the door, he paused and took a few deep breaths, nervous. Pussy. Just open the damn door and look in on her. She’s not dead.
He hoped.

You gotta love when lack of communication plays tricks with your mind. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writing Warrior list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Anastasia Vitsky, SJ Maylee, Gem Sivad, Goran Zidar, Zee Monodee, and Karla Doyle.

Author Spotlight: Cat Johnson, Military Erotic Suspense Author and New Release

Good morning. Today I have the great opportunity to showcase multipublished author Cat Johson and her new release. I met Cat at Authors After Dark in New Orleans and managed not to do too much of a fangirl freak-out on her. She's been one of my favorite authors since I read Trey: Red, Hot, & Blue #1 aloud to my husband. I was thrilled to find out the series continued. Cat writes hot, funny, and heartfelt. Now I'm here to give her a warm send off. The Commander is the last story in this series and she's saved the best for last. Cat has generously offered an excerpt for you to enjoy and it's good.

But first, the Blurb for The Commander (Red, Hot, & Blue):

To his men on his SpecOps team, Hank Miller is simply the commander. The military is his life, and that’s all he needs—until he travels to Pigeon Hollow for a wedding and meets the woman his men reverently call “Mama”.
Lois Gordon is nothing like Hank envisioned. Instead of the plump, older woman happily baking pies in her farmhouse kitchen, Lois is a smart, sexy powerhouse who runs Gordon Equine…and tempts him to break all his own rules.
The heat between them quickly flares into a weekend fling hotter than Lois’s oven. But with Hank’s dangerous career and two failed marriages between them, forever could be too much to ask for.
Warning: Contains one smoking-hot mama and a man tough enough to not need pot holders to handle her.
Excerpt:

Matt stared toward the group near the house. “Can you believe she’s old enough to be Jimmy and Jack’s mother?”
“I know.” Trey shook his head. “She must have been a teenager when she had Jimmy.”
The rest of the group turned to look at the woman who was now in Jack’s arms.
“Wait a minute. That’s Mama?” Hank nearly choked. The tempting brunette in the flip-flops, blue jeans and well-filled T-shirt? The one he’d been staring at and drooling over for the past few minutes?
“Yup.” Matt nodded.
“No way.” Bull squinted into the distance. “I pictured her looking like Betty Crocker or Mrs. Butterworth. You know, short, plump, wearing an apron covered in flour and holding a pie in her hands.”
That was how Hank had visualized her too. He certainly hadn’t thought he’d be imagining rolling around sweaty with her like he’d been since he first laid eyes on the tempting woman.
“Are you sure that’s Mama?” Hank couldn’t wrap his mind around this revelation.
“Of course, we’re sure.” Trey laughed. “Matt and I were here during our leave last year.”
“Visiting Jack and Jimmy,” Matt added.
“Yes, I know.” Hank had more productive things to worry about than what shady things these two jokers had done. Things such as why was the one woman he’d been interested in since his divorce the mother of two of the men under his command? That made the situation as sticky as one of her famous pies.
Hank watched as Jimmy hustled an ill-looking Lia into the house. Jared and the blonde followed them inside with the suitcases from the trunk of the convertible, and Jack escorted Mama back toward the SUV...and Hank.
His heart rate sped the closer she got, and he smothered a curse at how his body reacted to her like he was a damn teenager. This was the last thing he needed, a schoolboy crush on an off-limits woman.
He searched for a reason to not be attracted to Mama, besides the fact that she was Mama. He knew Jack and Jimmy’s father had left when they were young. He didn’t seem to be in the picture at all. Maybe Mama had a boyfriend. A woman who looked that good wouldn’t stay alone long. Yeah, that would be good. If she were dating, the guy would be invited to the wedding, and then Hank wouldn’t be tempted to even think about her. He blew out a soft breath as Mama took another step toward him.
Perhaps if he kept thinking of her as Mama, he’d remember how off-limits she was. That was his plan and he was sticking to it. Though his resolve wavered as she stood in front of him.
“Commander, this is my mama, Lois Gordon,” Jack introduced them. “Mama, Commander Hank Miller.”
Up close she looked even more like her sons. Like them, she had hazel eyes and golden-brown hair, except hers fell to her shoulders in soft, sun-kissed waves.
Hank extended his hand. “Mrs. Gordon, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Your boys have told me so much about you.”
Everything except how young and attractive she was. That bit of information would have been nice to have in advance.

Snipppet Sunday - The Navy's Ghost - Ambushed by Love

Welcome to the Snippet Sunday on the Weird, the Wild, and the Wicked. Thank you so much for visiting. If you choose to comment today, I really appreciate it. Today I'm introducing my latest release, The Navy's Ghost, a military romantic suspense, though I call it my Menage a'SEALs. No paranormal critters in this one, though there's plenty of kick-ass adventure and hot sex. Just to be clear, this is a M/F/M erotic romance.

Ensign Christiana "Ghost" Brickman is taking the helo express home after almost bleeding out in an ambush. Her squad is around her and two of her teammates, Todd "Magic" Hunter and Lt. Jim "Retro" Waters are keeping an eye on her. And Magic has been having some unauthorized feelings for Chris.

As she lay dying on the grimy floor of the Nicaraguan warehouse, Magic’s feelings for Ensign Christiana Brickman had crystallized into blinding clarity. I love her. He’d ignored the thought in favor of saving her life, but now, with the squad around him and the action settled, it came roaring back into his mind, clear as day. Jubilation mixed with terror settled into his gut. No fraternization within the ranks. Too bad his heart couldn’t remember the rules.
“How’s she doing, Magic?” Retro shouted through the mic to Magic over the rotors.
“Stable for now. High as a kite, but stable.”
“Good to hear. Pilot says back on base in fifty mikes.”
“Roger that.”
“Why do they always use boys’ names for everything?”
Retro and Magic turned to the woman lying between them and met the clouded hazel gaze beneath the lowered brows. “Say again, Brickman?”
“Boys’ names. Why do they always use them for everything?”
“What are you talking about?” Retro raised an eyebrow.
“You know, Mike for minute, Roger for understood.” Brickman rolled her head to pin Retro with her focus. “Jimmy for futzing with locks. Hey, your name is Jim.” She licked her lips and swallowed. “I like your name, Jim Retro. And I like you, too. You’re handsome.”
“Yep. Definitely high as a kite.” Retro snorted and shot a smile at Magic. Todd tried to smile back, but his gut sank. What if she preferred Jim over him? Get your head back in the game. She’s never shown interest in any of us.

Uh-oh. It sounds like Magic has lost his heart to the one woman he's not supposed to want. There are several great authors on the Weekend Writing Warrior list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Anastasia Vitsky, SJ Maylee, Gem Sivad, Goran Zidar, Zee Monodee, and Karla Doyle.

5 Questions of a Paranormal and Romantic Suspense Author: Silver James

Welcome back to the Weird, the Wild, and the Wicked. Today I have the honor of hosting paranormal romantic suspense author Silver James (who’s one of my all time favorites, btw) with a new release, Christmas Moon. I finally met Silver at Hot Mojave Knights 2013 and she is even cooler in person than she is online. Hoorah! She is also graciously offering an excerpt to everyone, and a copy of her ebook to one lucky commenter.

Welcome, Silver. Thank you for being with me today. *Squeee!* Okay, fangirl moment done. :D

What started you on the path to becoming a paranormal romance author after being a first responder?

What’s that old adage? Write what you know? I was a writer long before I became a first responder and I’ve been a fan of paranormal romance since I first discovered the genre. It just made sense to combine the two and add in my experiences as an officer’s wife when my husband was in the army. As a result, all my main characters seem to be involved either in the military or public service in some form or another.

Congratulations on your recent release on Christmas Moon. Introduce us to the main characters and premise of your story for those who haven’t read the series.

This is tough to answer because all the wolves are in this story. I suppose Mac and Hannah, the hero and heroine of the first book in the series—BLOOD MOON—lead the way in CHRISTMAS MOON. The Wolves were part of a Special Operations unit in the army. Due to circumstances and on account of because, the unit was disbanded and subsequently brought back together. There’s a civilian corporation wanting to exploit their “unique” genetic structure and we all know no good will come of that! LOL Hannah was an army major sent on an assignment with the Wolves and during the course of it, she and Mac discovered they were mates. The premise for this particular story is that the Wolves are now outlaws, which is tough with wives and kids involved, it’s almost Christmas, and they owe a debt of honor to the family of a deceased comrade.

Did anything in particular inspire this story?

Actually, it was the fans of the series. Lots of readers were “poking” me about when the next book would be out and even though I was in the middle of launching a new urban fantasy series, I decided to write a Christmas story for them. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen for sure but when Liam (Mac and Hannah’s preteen son) reminded me that his first change was about to happen and he really wanted his dad to be there to help, the plot just fell into place.

I love your blending of werewolves and military. What are the Wolves’ origins and how did they get involved in the military?

According to their backstory, the Wolves have been around and serving in the military since the Declaration of Independence, basically. Several of them rode with Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. Nakai, one of the Wolves in the first three books, was a Navajo Code Talker. In my werewolf mythos, the wolf DNA traces back to two roots—either Celtic or Indian (Native American). As a result, my wolves tend to be of Scot/Irish descent or like Michael Lightfoot and Jacob Nakai, Indian. These two “ancestry” groups tend to have a strong sense of military duty in real life. In the series, the military has always had a need for the type of missions they go on, though the true nature of their unique abilities is a state secret. Or was until Black Root Corporation got involved. Cue the dramatic music here…

Uh-oh...What other projects are on the horizon for you that we’re likely to see?

Where to start? LOL There’s at least one wolf who hasn’t met his mate yet so Antoine’s story is still to be told. Look for BLUE MOON next spring. I also plan on producing full novels that detail more of the backstory and some of the things that happen between each of the novellas. The first, MOONSTRUCK: SECRETS AND LIES will encompass the first three stories—BLOOD MOON, BAD MOON, and HUNTER’S MOON. The second, MOONSTRUCK: BETRAYAL, covers the next three books, WOLF MOON, BRIDE’S MOON, and ROGUE MOON. They’ll be available in digital and print formats next spring as well.

Additionally, I’ve launched my new urban fantasy series, The Penumbra Papers, with the prequel novella, THAT OL’ BLACK MAGIC, and the first book in the series, SEASON OF THE WITCH. I’m at work on the second book, THE DEVIL’S CUT and it will be available in 2014.

Thank you for joining me today, Silver, and we look forward to all your upcoming releases. Definitely!

EXCERPT of CHRISTMAS MOON:

Liam stood in the door of the RV, so angry his whole body vibrated. “We won’t have a Christmas? Mom, you promised!” He whirled and was gone before his parents could react.

“Aw, crap. I’m sorry.” Sean’s expression turned hang dog. “I didn’t realize he was standing there.”

By the time Mac got to the door, with Hannah close on his heels, Liam was already ducking into the woods at the edge of the campsite. Cody stood frozen in place, his eyes wide and scared, as he squeezed Micah’s hand to keep the little boy from crying. He turned to the adults.

“No Christmas?” His voice quivered as his bottom lip trembled.

Micah let out a wail, which brought his parents barreling through Hannah and Mac. Sean and Annie followed close behind.

“What the hell? What did you promise, Hannah?” Mac’s lips pressed into a tight line.

She scrubbed her hands through her hair. “He was worried about Christmas, Mac.”

“And?”

Hannah’s fingers curled against her palms as she fought down her temper. “And, while the holiday has tended to be a little loose for us because of our jobs, this year, he decided it was important.”

“So you promised him?” Exasperated, Mac turned away to hunt his son. He paused when Hannah’s hand grabbed his biceps.

“No. I promised him I would try. There is a difference, Mac.”

“Mommy, does that mean Santa won’t find us?” Cody stared up at Annie, his gaze darting between her and Sean.

Annie looked helpless and Sean wanted to kick himself for ever opening his mouth. “Charlie foxtrot,” he muttered. “It’ll be okay, little man.”

Liz cradled Micah in her arms and leaned against Michael. “I know you have to do this, but yeah, I sort of feel the same way.”

Picking up a rock, Hannah hurled it against the nearest tree. She muttered curse words, aware of big eyes watching her every move. After counting to a hundred, for the second time, she inhaled deeply, held her breath then exhaled in one long gust. Turning to face the crowd now gathered outside the RV, she slid into her role of commanding officer like a chameleon changing colors.

“It will be okay, Cody. Santa is full of magic and he knows where all the good little boys and girls are sleeping on Christmas Eve. At the rate Liam is going, he’s liable to get coal and switches in his stocking.”

Cody’s eyes widened so much Hannah could see the whites all the way around his pupils.

She closed her eyes briefly then opened them and tried again. “Santa will find us no matter where we are, Cody. And there will be a tree and presents and Christmas dinner.”

“You bet, Cody.” Jacey stepped over to side with Hannah. “I’ll make cinnamon rolls for breakfast and we’ll figure out turkey and dressing and all the trimmings.”

“Olives? I like olives.”

Annie rubbed her son’s shoulder. “Absolutely olives, Cody. The pitted kind and I won’t even fuss if you eat them off the tips of your fingers.”

Thank you for stopping by, good luck in the giveaway, and happy reading! :)

Mid Week Tease - The Navy's Ghost - Boys' Names

Welcome to the Weird, the Wild, & the Wicked for this week's Mid Week Tease hosted by Sandra Bunino.

Authors: this is a great opportunity to spotlight a few lines or even a paragraph or two from a new release or backlisted title. Readers: you get to sample some delicious snippets! We’ll do our best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.

My Mid Week Tease is from my upcoming release The Navy's Ghost. Todd "Magic" Hunter is the medic in Bravo Squad of the Navy SEALs Team 9. He's just managed to save Ensign Brickman from bleeding out and the near loss has triggered his emotions. Brickman is high on morphine and says anything she feels.

Dear God, of all of us, why her?
It didn’t matter. She’d survived. End of story. Magic made sure the morphine dulled some of her pain as they medevac’d her ass home and periodically checked the bandages around her thigh. She’s fine. Stop fussing. But he couldn’t help the checking or the worry.
As she lay dying on the grimy floor of the Nicaraguan warehouse, his feelings for Ensign Christiana Brickman had crystallized into blinding clarity.

The Navy's Ghost will be available on Smashwords, ARe, and Amazon on Monday, Dec. 2, 2013

Men & Women of the Military Giveaway Hop

Photobucket

Welcome to the Weird, the Wild, & the Wicked for the Men & Women of the Military Giveaway Hop celebrating Veteran's Day! It is such an honor to be part of this hop and my first romantic suspense with SEALs will be out in 2013. So rather than talk about how my family is involved with the military (which it isn't), I thought I'd give you an excerpt of my upcoming military menage, The Navy's Ghost.

The Navy's Ghost Excerpt:

Lieutenant Junior Grade Todd “Magic” Hunter lengthened his strides down the hallway of Bethesda Medical Center, searching for the nurses’ station to find out where they’d moved Ghost. His gut clenched at the thought she may not have made it after all their efforts to save her. Dammit, if the stupid doctors lost her after he managed to clamp her artery shut, he’d tear this place apart.
Beside him, silent and deadly, Lieutenant Jim “Retro” Waters looked quiet enough, but Magic knew the bigger man was going out of his mind with worry. Waters was 6’4”, 230 pounds of badass SEAL with black hair and deep brown eyes. His face was chiseled and squared-jawed, like Robert Redford, complete with the cleft in his chin, and his eyes could bore a hole through concrete when he stared. He could be alternately scary or mysterious, projecting the Bad Boy image perfectly, and women melted at his feet, much to the other SEALs’ disgust.
“Where are the fucking nurses?” Retro growled.
“Doesn’t matter. Read the white board,” Magic remarked, pointing to the Nurse Rotation board behind the desk. They found Brickman listed with a nurse’s name.
“Room 15.”
They shifted direction like a school of fish, quick and coordinated in their movements without awkwardness. Magic felt some of his tension fade as he approached the room. Ghost was no longer in the ICU. That had to be a good thing.
But when they reached the door, they both paused and looked at each other, suddenly nervous.
Pussy. Just open the damn door and look in on her. She’s not dead.
He hoped. He watched Retro take a deep breath, then depress the door handle and push the door slowly open.
The room was dark and empty of ornamentation, only the bed and the medical equipment filled the small space. Magic’s anger kindled when he realized there were no flowers or balloons to liven the somber atmosphere and he vowed to remedy that immediately. He heard Retro suck his breath in a little fast and he swung his gaze finally to the occupant in the bed.
She was asleep, her head turned toward the shaded window as if seeking the light. She looked so small and fragile, though he knew she was anything but, and his chest tightened with anguish at her condition.
Dear God, why her? Of all of us, why her?
“Open the shades, Retro,” Magic whispered as he retreated to the door to snag the chart in the holder outside. “Let her see the light when she wakes up.”
Retro glided across the floor in silence and twisted the rod hanging from the top of the window. The last light of the setting sun painted orange stripes on the wall and the foot of the bed as Magic looked over the chart, too afraid to take in the details of Ghost’s body beneath the covers. He was barely aware of Retro snagging a chair and planting himself in it beside the bed. He did notice when his best friend took Ghost’s hand and held it, his broad shoulders slumping in dismay.
“What’s it say, Magic?” Retro rumbled without looking up. “How’s she doing?”
“She’s doing good,” Magic replied absently as he read. “They’ve got her on 10 cc’s of Dilaudid.”
Retro whistled softly. “That should take the edge off.”
“Yeah. Captain said it was ugly, her leg.” Magic grimaced as he remembered slicing through her thigh muscles with his field knife to get to her artery. He’d butchered her and her blood had been everywhere, but he’d somehow found the artery and staunched the flow before it took her soul with it. “They stitched her up and the CT scans show the artery’s strong, but her leg looks like the victim of a shark attack. Fuck, Retro, I carved her up like a Thanksgiving turkey!”
“Yeah, but it saved her life. I don’t think she’d begrudge that. Have they given her anything for bone and muscle replacement?”
“They’ve increased her calcium intake for bone replacement and protein for muscle and soft tissue development. Progress is ‘satisfactory’.”
Retro snorted. “Not satisfactory for me…or Ghost, I’d bet.”
Magic heard the anguish in Retro’s quiet words and wondered for the hundredth time when the larger SEAL was going to admit he’d fallen for their female comrade.
Probably never now that he knows I love her, too.
Magic was still kicking himself over revealing to his best buddy that he loved Lt. Christiana “Ghost” Brickman, realizing it only when she lay dying under his hands on that grimy warehouse floor. He’d never been so focused in his life and he’d thanked every god out there for it each day since. At least they’d gotten the bastard who lured her into an ambush and the homegrown terrorists paying him. A small victory in the face of the tragedy that lay in the bed in front of him.
Setting the chart aside, Magic approached the bed and stared down at the woman sleeping there.
Sleeping beauty. He felt a half grin slide over his face. Yeah, but don’t kiss her to wake her up. He’d find himself on his back with a knife at his throat and a rabid weasel on his chest.
God, he loved her. He’d loved her ever since she’d gotten those hostages out through the drainage pipe no wider than a meter in diameter right under the noses of the Afghani guards. She’d been magnificent and lethal, and his cock had hardened at the thought of having her not only by his side, but in his bed. She had him hooked when she told them about the guard who opened his fly and pissed on the wall right next to her, never seeing her.
That had been their first real op right after graduating from BUD/S training and his love had only grown from there. He’d said nothing to her, of course, not willing to trash the amazing friendship and trust they’d developed over the last four and a half years in Team 4, Squad Beta.
Now she lay in a bed, recovering from the worst wound he’d ever seen in the field and his heart broke for her.
“No, probably not satisfactory to her at all,” he agreed, noting the IV bag hung nearly empty. The nurse would be in to change it soon. “She’ll never be back with the Squad, you know.”
“What?” Retro looked startled.
Magic nodded, his chest tightening. “Perforated artery and fractured femur. It’s a done deal. She’s beached.”
“Fuck.”
“Yeah.”
“What’s she going to do now? The SEALs was all she ever wanted.”
“I don’t know.”
Magic studied the fading sunlight on Retro’s face and knew the other man’s heart was breaking as much as his own. They knew Ghost best, her hopes and fears, her strengths and weaknesses. Hell, they even knew she hated Tequila and cilantro, loved Dutch chocolate wine and Indian food, and hoped to visit Machu Pichu whenever they got more than a few days leave at a time.
You’ll get to go now, Ghost. He doubted she’d be very pleased with her opportunity.
“This is gonna kill her, Magic,” Retro murmured, his voice hollow with despair.
“No, it’s not. She’s tougher than this. She’s tougher than any of us. Hasn’t she taught us that enough times over the last four years?”
Retro laughed without humor. “Yeah, she has.” He kept rubbing the back of her hand in gentle circles with his thumb. “I hope she wakes up soon. I want her to know we’re here.”
“Yeah, me too.”

The End of a Decade of Terror

We've all heard that a special forces team found and killed Osama Bin Laden. It's the end of a decade's worth of his brand of terrorism.

But I caution against gloating.

"Convince an enemy, convince him that he's wrong
Is to win a bloodless battle where victory is long
A simple act of faith
In reason over might
To blow up his children will only prove him right"
History Will Teach Us Nothing - Sting

We've just made the man a martyr, for which hundreds will die just to add their glory in his death.

What I think what would be more productive and healthy for us all, since we must share this planet, like it or not, is to send blessings to all those who have fought and must continue to fight. Our military is extraordinary and strong, persistent and willing to do the job most of us cannot. The men and women who can do this job have my gratitude and blessings. Give thanks, gratitude, to the positive things; it's useless to glory in the hate and anger. It only shows our opponents they were right all along; it only spurs their hate and anger of us.

I'm not an idealist. I don't believe in peace at all costs. I'm a realist and it seems the most realistic to focus on the good that has happened since the first attack in September 2001. Bin Laden won no points that day from the world's perspective because his attack on the World Trade Center was indiscriminate; if he was targeting the Americans, he failed miserably and killed several people from other nations. I am glad his hate and fear mongering has ended, but to revel in his death only shows that the arrogance of which he accused us is accurate.

Perhaps, now we should show our greatness by our capacity for compassion for those people he has hurt; not just the Americans, but also those in the Middle East, who continue to suffer and hate us merely for our nationality because of his teachings. I urge everyone to count your blessings today, not only that you're alive and healthy, but that we have a strong military, the ability to see different perspectives, and we can move on from this moment, like we did from September 2001, with the intent to do better.

I encourage you to see the historical significance of today, to revel in gratitude and relief at the end of a decade of terror. I encourage you to count your blessings. And I hope that you'll find compassion in your heart instead of gloating and self-righteousness. Many blessings to you all.
