  1. “You aren’t serious thinking-”

“Look, I’m just telling you what I’m feeling. Forget about it. I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.”

She sat across from me, perfectly calm. She didn’t look stressed or tired. She didn’t look depressed. She looked...peaceful.

    “I don’t understand,” I admitted.

“No, I didn’t expect you would,” she said with sigh, rising from the table. “I’m going to pack up the leftovers.”

“And you’re going to take them in your lunch tomorrow,” I verified.

“That’s the plan. Not, y’know, the first plan.”

“The first plan is to not be here tomorrow,” I verified.

She stopped at the sink, her shoulders slumping. “Yes, that’s the first plan. The first plan is to go to bed and will the world not to be here when I get up. The first plan is to let go of everything and cease to be. The first plan-”

“Please stop,” I beg her, wrapping arms around her shoulders. “Promise me you’ll make an appointment in the morning? Promise you’ll try again.” I whisper the words in her ear, fighting back tears.

“I’ll tell you whatever you want to hear. I’ll call the psychiatrist in the morning.”

    “Thank you.”

  2. Betrayal

“I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear, but you may not like it.”

Clara stared out the window, her back to Ben. She’d been dreading this day for a long time, but in a way, it was a relief to finally tell him the truth.

“I’m waiting. Where have you been going all those nights you told me you were helping your mother?”

He sounded angry and hurt, and Clara didn’t blame him. She turned to face him again, looking into his dark eyes, feeling her heart swell with love…and pity. He was going to hate her in a few minutes, but it couldn’t be helped.

    “I’ve been…with Joey.”

Ben’s face turned to stone, but a fire burned in the ebon eyes. It seared her to her core, and she caught her breath.

“Joey.” She nodded. “I told you to stay away from him, Clara. I warned you.” His voice was ice.

“I know.” Clara took a step towards him, then stopped. “I can’t help it. You know that.”

“I know you said you loved me. I know you said you would do everything you could to help it. How long?”

    “Six or seven months.”

Ben’s jaw tightened and his fists clenched. “So…this is how we end then. With lies and betrayal. I promised I’d help, Clara, but you didn’t give me time. So be it.”

He turned on his heel and left the room. Clara felt Joey’s call in her mind as she prepared to leave.

    “Hungry, Mama.”

  3. Is he serious? I thought looking up from my bloodied knees. I stood slowly with shaky hands out to my side. “Honey?” I said softly, “Don’t do this.”

“I’ll be fine, love,” he said. Hands down to his side, my lover merely smiled at the gun pointed to his face. “He pushed you down, stole your purse is now demanding that I give over the ring I want to marry you with. When I’ve taken care of this nuisance, we’ll have to finish our conversation. You were going to tell me something, remember?”

He was serious. Oh hell. Was all that talk about being a super soldier and a spy true? Was he delusional? I took a breath. His confidence poured off him like fountain of cool water. Only crazy people were that calm under pressure – or he was telling the truth.

“Fine,” I said. “You take care of this, quietly, without killing anyone AND with no trace back to you? I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.”

It was over in less than twenty seconds. Before I knew it, our assailant was disarmed, knocked unconscious and tucked behind a dumpster with the gun dumped in another bin. He retrieved my purse and handed it back to me.

“There,” he said dusting himself off. “No prints, no fuss, no muss. Now, I believe we were right about here.” He got down on one knee and pulled out ring with a giant ruby. “Will you marry me?”

  4. The Loneliness of Evening

“I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.”

His words were quiet, filled with a bitterness I was not accustomed to hearing in his voice. I raised my head from the papers in front of me and studied him, puzzled. Normally I could read him like a book—he was so refreshingly honest—but I could read nothing in his face as he looked out the window at the rapidly passing countryside.

My question died on my lips as I looked at him anxiously. Had I pushed him too far? It suddenly occurred to me that I never treated his plans as though they were important. Perhaps the future of the country did not hang on them, but they may have been important to him, and I usually dragged him off on my own adventures without a thought for what plans he might have had. Yes, I asked him if he wanted to accompany me…but never in the serious expectation that he would say no. I had come to count on him. Perhaps I had demanded too much.

“I wish to hear the truth,” I said at last, my voice soft. “Would you have rather remained in London?”

“Alone?” he said, without taking his eyes from the window. “Never, Holmes.” He turned then, and I met the brown eyes of John Watson, the eyes that had brought such comfort over the years. “Never without you.”

  5. I didn’t bring them here. I didn’t do anything but make sure they continued to suffer in their own misery. It was boring and the mere look of constant sorrow on their faces boiled my blood.
The Inbetween was another story. The more happiness they had the more the sorrow of their mistakes ate them up inside. I’d heard many stories about being one of them with all of their imperfections.
That’s what made them so wonderfully beautiful.
All of those failures, insecurities, and flaws.
    Irresistible.
I held up the glass shard in my hand and in it was the vision of a boy. His fingers were lightly clinging to the railing of bridge. In his mind he asked the universe, “Anything is better than this, isn’t it?”
God may not have been there to answer but I was.
“I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.” My voice resonated through his ears as the railing slipped from his grip. Influence was always so much more entertaining than watching an already broken soul.
It was time to do more than just watch.
A pleasant smirk moved my stone face.
It’s been centuries since I was that excited about something, anything.

  6. Ok here we go again. It's 250 words (not counting title). My twitter is @JXilon.

    The Storyteller

“I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.”

That was the storyteller’s promise, and we all crept closer, lured by his sincerity.

“Will you tell about the day the moon cracked?” Twisted Sally asked him.

“I’ll tell you of the day the moon cracked and the Goblin King came to steal the clouds of earth.”

“I want to hear about when the the oceans boiled,” Big Gus said.

“I’ll tell you of the roiling, boiling oceans and how the Atlanteans had to crawl onto the the beaches and beg for sanctuary.”

“I want to hear about the great revolt,” One-eyed Jane called out from the back.

“Of course!” the storyteller said. “I can tell you of the rebellion that felled the arcologies and brought the Oxygen Barons low.”

“What about our parents?” Red Anne, the smallest child, called out. “Will you tell us where our parents went?”

Silence fell like dominoes as each child held his breath and looked to the storyteller. He clasped his hands together and stared at Red Anne.

“Is that really the story you wish?” he asked her.

She nodded slowly, as if she were afraid a faster movement might break something delicate.

“Is that the story you all want to hear?” the old man asked the other children.

No one said no. No one said yes.

The storyteller bent his head in agreement. His voice was barely a whisper. “Our tale begins a long time ago, though not so long as you might think…”

  7. “I wish we could stay here,” Jeannie murmured.

Tom only looked down at her in reply, a dip of his chin to where she lay with her head cradled in his lip. But Jeannie wasn’t looking at him. Her eyes were trained on the halo of blue arcing over their heads, and the paper-thin clouds playing hide-and-go-seek with the sun.

“I wish we didn’t have to go back.”

He sighed, leaning back on palms anchored into the carpet of lush green, and the comforting smiles of dandelions that spread out beneath them.

Back home there were responsibilities and chores. There was family. And waiting for them back there were a thousand different reasons why they couldn’t be together.

Jeannie plucked a flower from the earth and held it to her lips. She whispered a soft prayer and then kissed the tendrils of white with her breath, freeing them from the stem that held them captive and scattering off into the winds.

“Tell me my wish came true?” she entreated, a tear slipping down her face.

Tom lifted a hand and brushed a calloused knuckle over the silky pale of her cheek.

“I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.”

  8. She'd caught up with them, just as darkness fell, hold-up in a ramshackle hut on the edge of some godforsaken mining town. The sound of screams and snapping bones had cleared the fury from her mind, allowing a cold hard calm to possess her. Sue glanced around at the carnage, only three bodies. She had to find the fourth member of their gang; it was time to lay her final ghost to rest. Picking up his trail shouldn't be too hard, once the fresh air swept the scent of blood and urine from her nose.

They hadn't know what hit them. A pity really, but three against one weren't odds she took chances with.

A soft whimper caught her ear as she turned to leave. She rushed to the bodies checking. Yes, one of them was still alive. Eagerly she dragged him to the remaining chair, set him on it, and waited for him to look her in the eyes.

Soft and pudgy, he wasn't much to look at, much less something to inspire terror. But he was broken now, and stained with his own blood. He moaned in pain, and whined, "I'll tell you want ever you wish to hear."

Sue smiled, revealing needle sharp teeth, and purred " I know you will. Luckily torture isn't about the truth. It's about power and payback."

Her friends had always said she should have been a were-cat not a were-wolf.

  9. One Good Turn...

“I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.” Her eyes were glassy, her words robotic.

“Unacceptable. I want your pain, your secrets. I want you to beg.” Jared leaned over her, menacing.

For the first time, she smiled, and her eyes held a sliver of life, a spiteful spark. “Then you shall go away disappointed.”

She heard the snick of the switchblade as it sprang open and smelled the rot of his raspy breath, nostrils flaring, eyes like flint. There she was, trussed up like a Thanksgiving Day turkey in a madman’s den, and her smile only widened.

“Go ahead,” she invited. “Cut me.”

“How about I cut your family?”

“I have no family. Pain I have in abundance, but you can’t have that.” She laughed throatily, inciting his anger.

“Oh, I can make you hurt, sister.”

“True, but you will never touch my inner pain. Your cuts will merely be a welcome distraction.”

Enraged, he slid the knife beneath the ropes he’d spent so much time securing and slit them open, hauling Kelly to her feet. Her legs gave way, and she slipped the machete out of her boot as she hit the floor. He cursed, reaching down to assist.

“You’re all the same,” she whispered bitterly, shoving hard, the blade moving through flesh and sinew, cracking bone.

His eyes bulged, face incredulous as he fell back, bleeding out.

“All clear.” Kelly giggled. “Another one down.”

  10. Not at all defective

I picked up the bot at 50% discount in a sale. I've avoided them up til now because I didn't see the point but just like all technology, once all my friends had one I started to feel like a dinosaur.

He was a good-looking young man to take care of the household chores for me and not argue back … such a change from my late husband!

I read the instructions, noting that I could programme in his name and that he could never do me harm or lie to me (again a nice change from Jeremy!)

I plugged him in and waited for his eyes to sparkle, which they did (rather attractively) and I said “Your name is Clarke, like Gable or Superman,” which was a mistake because he took that to be his name and wouldn't respond to anything but that whole sentence... ever!

I asked him why he was on discount and he smiled a lovely smile and said “I have a defect, Madam and my line has been withdrawn from the market.”

    “What defect?”

“I'm a dream-weaver, Madam. I'll tell you whatever you wish to hear. I pick up from your question what your desired answer is.”

    “Am I beautiful?”

    “Totally, Madam.” That smile!

    “Can bots fall in love?”

    “Of course.”

“They think that's a defect? Oh boy … not as far as I'm concerned.”

  11. “Your husband is dead.”

He didn’t attempt to sugarcoat it. I was grateful for that small mercy, though I could have done without the gleam in his eyes.

“Thank you for telling me,” I said. Knowing this moment was coming hadn’t made it any easier; not freaking out was a small, stupid victory.

“You kept your end of the bargain,” he said. “Are you ready now for mine?”

Ready?? How could anyone ever be ready for such a thing? I could barely breathe for the horror of it. Not that breathing would matter much after today.

“You are stalling.” He flung the accusation across empty air. “I remind you the agreement is sealed. It cannot be undone.”

    “No—no, I’m not stalling. I’m ready.”

“I’ve agreed I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear. That was my oath, and my oath cannot be broken. Choose.”

    “I…”

“CHOOSE!” (How odd: anxiety, not impatience, roared into my ears.)

I dug deep, summoning Jamir’s broad, grinning face. His strong, tender hands. His beautiful, beautiful green eyes, and that softness when they met mine. Yes; these would be enough to last. More than enough. “Then I choose—to remember.”

He froze. A heartbeat (was my heart still beating?). Finally he spoke, and his words tumbled gently (enviously?) into my hope-filled ears. “I do not understand, but it will be as you asked. You will remember him.”

And with that Death reached for my hand and my final breath, and together we plunged into darkness.

  12. I couldn’t believe it. My father was in my living room. But he couldn’t be because he was dead. He had been for ten years. I rounded the corner from the kitchen into the living room and he was standing there, waiting for me. My sandwich and the plate it was on fell to the ground. Bread, lettuce, salami, and glass were in a jumbled mess on the floor at my feet.

I blinked my eyes several times against what must have been a hallucination. He walked over and placed his hand on my arm, waiting.

    “Dad?”

“Hey, Champ.” The man looked exactly like my father, but something wasn’t right. He had never called me Champ in my entire life.

“Who are you? And why are you in my house?”

    “How did you know?”

“I’m asking the questions. Who are you?”

“That’s not important. But I have something to say that is. You are taking a train in the morning. It’s going to derail. You mustn’t be on that train.”

“How do you know I’m taking the train?”

    “That’s not important.”

“But you expect me to listen to you? You'd better give me something else.”

Before my eyes, the man who looked like my father changed. He became a woman. He became Jordan, my girlfriend.

“I can be whoever you want me to be. I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear except who I am and how I know. But you must listen to me. You must not go.”

  13. The spears poked into my flesh. There was nowhere for me to run at the moment. I had another trick up my sleeve, if I just could get to it.

“Gentlemen,” I exclaimed, looking at the faces near me. “It’s on the warm side today; can we take it to the shade?”

Their eyes shifted side to side. At least they understood my language; this could be a whole lot worse. The natives to my sides lowered their spears, while one in front and one behind kept theirs firmly in place. Slowly, we moved towards the copse of trees.

“Now we’re getting somewhere,” I thought with a smile, then said, “I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear but you have to promise to let me go on my way without any harm.” It might be too early in the conversation but it was worth a try.”

“Why you steal from scared burial ground?” I presume the leader asked.

Not too early after all, “I am quite embarrassed. I wasn’t aware that it was a burial ground. Now if there aren’t any other questions, I really need to be on my way.” I started away from the tree. “I have a meeting with…”

A sharp pain erupted in my back. I staggered and felt a warm liquid flow down my chest. I looked down at the tip of the spear jutting from my chest. I guess they didn’t fully grasp our deal, then again we didn’t shake on it either.

  14. "Computer Love"

She was the cutting edge of biotech. Few androids could stand up to her specs, and yet, she here she was: a low-end hooker. And it was his fault. He should have been more careful.

He rubbed his hand on his pants. She took her jacket off, winking. She sat beside him on the cheap bed, touched his knee.

He grabbed her hand. “Tell me you remember me.”

“I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear, baby,” she purred, leaning in.

He stopped her hand on her shoulder. “No, I mean it. Do you remember me?”

Her pretty mouth finally dipped into a frown. She tilted her head, then shook it. “No, I’m sorry, baby, I get a lot of customers. But I’m sure we can make this time memorable.” She leaned in again and he stopped her again. This time she crossed her arm. “Look, if you’re not here to party, you need to get out.”

    “Jamie,” he said.

She stood then. “How do you know my name?”

He stood, too, holding his hands out. “I only want to help.”

“I don’t need a hero,” she hissed. “But you’re gonna need one real soon.” She turned to get her pimp. He couldn’t allow that.

He grabbed her arm, stuck her with the needle he’d had in his jacket.

She swooned as her eyes flittered closed. He caught her when she fell and when her eyes opened again, recognition bloomed. “Geoff?”

    “Yes, Jamie?”

    “Where are we?”

  15. Maritax raised her hand, “I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.”

“No, no, no! That’s not it at all! Anyone else?” Professor Utleg scanned the room as Maritax put out the fire on her upper right elbow.

“Will you tell me what you desire…?” piped Brieont.

“Very close. Good job. Anyone else want to try?” Brieont was his favorite. He beamed. I just wanted to wipe that smirk off his face.

I raised my upper left arm. Utleg nodded at me. “Could you tell me what you need?” He looked angry. I supposed I got it right. Again.

“Yes.” He said grudgingly and turned away from me to continue the lecture. Why couldn’t he say ‘good job’ just once to me? My left leg ignited just above the ankle. I sprayed a burst from my extinguisher. Why did I let him make me so frustrated? Why couldn’t I just get over it?

When the lecture was finally over, we all headed to Community Service. Colaxil scrambled next to me, “How did you know that was ‘need’? We haven’t gone over that one in class before.”

“The root looked more like the one for require than desire. I just guessed right.” Actually, I’d been studying. Knowledge was power, and I needed all I could get if I was going to get out of here.

“Oh. Yeah. Huh. So what do you think we’re going to do for CS today?”

“I’m sorry you’ve wandered into the wrong place.” said the man still holding me by my collar.
“Seen what? I’ve seen nothing, I don’t even have my contacts.”
“You lie well, an admirable quality, but as I said it’s too late.”
“Why does it have to be too late? You could pretend you didn’t see me. You don’t even have to tell whoever owns this place.”
“I own this place and I’m beginning to like you.” the man replied showing his teeth.
“If you like me, then you’ll let me go .I’ll pretend I didn’t see vampires, congregating and go on my merry way. No one believes in you anyway.”
“Do you know you are dying?” He asked suddenly.
    “What?”
“You have a brain tumour. You have about a week or two. Surely you felt dizzy forgotten where you are?”
“I’m imagining you then. What is your name... Prince Charming?”
“My name is Kieran O’Brien. You amuse me, would you like to live forever?”
    “You’d make me a vampire?”
“Yes, it’s past time for me to sire one of my own and make my mate.”
“Go ahead then I don’t want to die and if the tumour didn’t kill me, you would.”
His blue eyes willed me to let him drain me almost dry then he placed his blood into my mouth. I awoke the next morning and took my place as his vampire Queen.

  17. “Please. I need a job. I’ll do whatever you wish me to. I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear. Please. I just need a job. Any job.”

“Mr. Fay. I’m sorry. I understand. I’d like to help. I would. But we have a strict policy. We do not hire people that have any form of criminal record at all.” Those words were always followed by the sound of a door closing. Every job interview I’d had ended the same way. “You have a record. We can’t hire you.”

One stupid mistake, ten years ago. My 3rd year of college. My whole life in front of me. I had an awful fight with my girlfriend. I’d had a bad day. Failed a big test. My laptop was toast where I’d knocked over my Big Gulp, drowning it. Ten stitches in my right hand where I’d cut it, and missed the damn pepper while making dinner.

That night she said she didn’t want to see me again. That I had a dangerous temper. She was afraid I’d lose it. And hurt her. We argued. The argument got worse. Turned physical. I hit her. More than once. I didn’t mean to. I didn’t.

I spent two years in medical care. Learning all about anger management. Learning control.

One stupid mistake. 10 years ago. I’d pay for it forever.

  18. “You haven’t told me you love me in some time,” Emoz’s voice carried the same harsh steel of his décor.

Marqi smiled winsomely, “I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.”

Reclined on a bed of furs, the raven tressed sorceress took up the one soft place in the hard stone chamber. There was, of course, plenty of room on top of her for the armored tyrant if he chose to come away from the window.

“What I wish to hear, is the name of the dog who has usurped my place in your heart.”

Pouting, Marqi traced a finger over her milky thighs, “I don’t know his name.”

In a flash Emoz had lifted the voluptuous woman from his bed, steel gauntlet pinching into the supple flesh of her upper arm.

“Don’t trifle with me! Who is he?”

“The one the people are calling Innovator,” Marqi tossed her hair out of her face petulantly.

The tyrant’s vicious backhand sent his love reeling across the chamber.

“A mortal? You would dare choose a mortal over me?”

Laughing, Marqi looked up from the floor—the trickle of blood extending the crimson of her lips down her face and onto her bust.

“You wish he were still mortal! Emoz, Love, there’s a new breed of god in the kingdom.”

“I’m certain you were about to kiss me.”

“Actually, you were about to kiss me.”

“You were going to let me.”

“I’ll kiss you after,” I said without thinking.

Gray’s eyes flared and he leaned in again.

    “Tell me first.”

“Anything.” He looked a little desperate. “Fire away. I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.”

I gave him skeptical eyebrow. “Jeez, Gray. You’re not getting laid here. No need to trot out the male arsenal of things you say to get a girl naked.”

    “Kelly.”

“We’re in a lousy excuse for a hotel where, may I remind you, a demon just threw some poor bastard through my room wall.”

“One kiss,” he said. “I’ll be happy with one kiss.”

    “Yeah, right.”

“You are hell on a man’s ego, Kelly.”

“You’re tough,” I said, giving him a friendly slap on the shoulder. “You can take it. I have confidence in you.”

    “Ask your question, woman.”

    “What’s your first name?”

    “No way.”

“Oh, come on.” I shoved against his chest. “A girl outta know the name of the man she swaps spit with.”

“You have no romance in your soul.”

    “Your name,” I persisted.

He groaned and the sound shivered through me. “God, don’t ask me that. It’s terrible.”

I snickered. “You have to tell me now.”

  20. Sophie leaned forward to try to see if he really was a prisoner or he was trying to fool her. She only saw more ice bars through her own.

“Do you know if there is a way to stop the snow witch?”

There was a low chuckle. “Not that anyone has found yet. You think you’re the first to come and confront her over something, be it a person or just on principle. You should see the garden she has.”

Sophie peered around at all the ice. “This place has a garden?”

“It’s not like a garden any normal person would have, it’s one that she made of her sculptures. Those that have displeased her wind up there if she doesn’t break them when they’re on display inside.”

“How do you know this?” Sophie leaned forward again, pressing a finger against the ice and only getting her finger stuck for the trouble. She had to breathe on it get enough leverage to pull it free without losing some skin.

“You could say that I’ve been around for a while.” Another chuckle. “Too long. I suppose it won’t be long until I’m out with the rest.”

She tilted her head and stared at the figure. Strands of ragged brownish grey hair poking through. “Help me get out. I want to free my friend. If you help me, I’ll get you out too.”

He was quiet before a blue eye looked at her . “I’ll tell you whatever you wish to hear.”

  21. The corridor led toward my certain death. I disobeyed the council for the last time. My heart raced as I neared the large wooden door. Torches lined the walls, giving off a soft glow. During this time of war, the warmth from the flames comforted me. The door grew larger as we approached closer.

The gateway had been engraved with the faces of the original fae council, centuries ago. Each face watching as myself and the four guards made our way through the massive entrance.

"Come here child." A chill ran through me.

I walked to the six chairs that lined the opposite wall. Each filled with a member, each keeping their eyes on my every move. I stopped to stand just shy of the row of peering eyes.

"You have crossed every boundary we have lived by for centuries." I could hear the voice, but their lips did not moved.

"I have come, to stand before you as you've asked. I do not wish to fight, but war has begun, and I intend to finish it." Each word fell from my lips, I knew leaving unharmed had become inconceivable.

"You wish to challenge our law, you wish to challenge our beliefs. Vampires and Fae are at war because of you."

"I did not come here to comfort you and say 'I'll tell you whatever you wish to hear'. My only wish is to love, the fault in that is I am fae and he, he is vampire."
