  1. “I hear Earth is a beautiful place.”

I looked at the young angel next to me. He bore no scars. The armor on his wings was still polished, and new. He had never been to Earth before. Never faced Lucien’s minions before. Never faced humans before. So, he didn’t know.

    “Yeah. It’s pretty enough.”

He smiled. “Tell me about it?”

I kept it simple. “Earth has nights and days. It rotates on its axis. So the sun seems to come up from the horizon every day. And then sink below the horizon later that day. It’s pretty enough. Lots of colors. Pink, orange, yellow, gold.”

    “That sounds beautiful.”

“It has oceans of water covering over ⅔ of its surface. Where the oceans meet the land, there are cliffs, and beaches. With rocks and sand.”

“I want to see them. Sunrise, sunset, beaches, cliffs. Can we see them?”

“Yeah, kid. We can see them.”

So innocent. He didn’t know about fear, anger, rage, hatred, bigotry, pride, arrogance, lust. He didn’t know about sin. I sighed. I couldn’t let him go in blind. “There’s something you should know about earth. It’s beautiful, but it’s flawed.”

    “Flawed?”

“Ever hear the saying like Hell on Earth?” The kid just stared at me, so I explained. “Lucien and the fallen ones live there. Demons all. Earth itself is not Hell. But like hell it is.”

    “I don’t understand.”

“I know, kid. I know. But you will. You will.”

    The ship started its descent.

  2. Air snorted through my nose, hot on my upper lip. I wrung my hands. I watched ICU room four, waiting.

“Coby, calm down.” Hollister Macintosh she grabbed my shoulders.

“Everything is going to turn out just fine.”

“Like hell it is,” I ground out.

The glass door slid open, silent on its metal track. Dr. Rika Sullivan, a short, middle-aged, heavy-set woman with grey hair walked out. Her face was drawn, her eyes heavy, her mouth set in a thin line. I hit the floor, face in my hands, shoulders heaving.

    “I had to vent him.”

“FUCK!” I screamed, fists pounding the brown, industrial carpet. “FUCK!”

Sobs heaved out of me, as I rocked back and forth. I’d known that, someday, his lungs were going to kill him. I hadn’t planned on it being today.

    “Coby, look at me.”

Dr. Sullivan knelt in front of me, worried blue eyes ringed with lack of sleep. I wiped my face, as Hollister wrapped an arm around me and pulled me into a hug.

“Give him the next 24 hours.”

I stood, grateful for Hollister. The doctor gestured into the room. I walked in, took Jimmy’s hand. I sucked in a breath, as Hollister held me. Jimmy was lying still in bed, his chest moving with the ventilator.

“Don’t you die on me, Jimmy. We’ve still got two girls to raise.” Faintly, his hand squeezed mine. I nodded, wiping my face. “I love you, too.”

  3. One

I sweated bullets as I went into the office of social responsibility. My stomach ready to heave, two trimesters carrying a demon’s child had been difficult, but bureaucracy made me terrified. The secretary motioned for me to enter the office of Tenerife Callide.
“The government has decided due to your social, economic and intelligence status you are unsuitable for the demon Dr. William Donovan. You must cut all ties and report for a new partner.”
    “What?”
“Do I need to dumb this down for you? From this moment on your relationship is over.”
    “Like hell it is.”
“There is no appeal. You are fortunate there has been no issue from this unsanctioned unit. Such issue would be tested and if your genes were passed on would be terminated. ”
Flabbergasted, sucking m stomach in, I tried not to show my fear.
    “When do I report?”
    “Tomorrow at nine a.m.”
I left the building then, I needed to find William and somehow flee. Finding William in his office I explained our dilemma. William didn’t let me down he had anticipated this. We left for Xansa that night. Xansa deep within the bowels of the Earth in Tanzania was the perfect place to raise our son with no government interference. Our son grew strong and now leads the revolution to take back the earth and have all species natural procreated with no interference from bureaucrats. Soon every class and type will intermingle and be one species that is our dream.

  4. Bethany’s even breathing calmed Mack more than he liked, but he couldn’t argue with rest after the day he’d had.

His mind filled with strange images of the creatures he’d seen before the centaurs caught them. But while the images seemed confused at first, they all evened out into golden bronze hair and steel-gray eyes. Bethany’s visage smiled at him with coy seduction and one of her hands caressed his chest in invitation.

Mack’s cock responded with admirable alacrity and her other hand found his aching length, teasing it with feather-light touches. She wore nothing but her plaid flannel shirt unbuttoned to her breastbone and he wanted to trace her midline with his tongue.

“You’re so hot, Mack.” Her breath caressed his cheek, followed by her lips. “You’re my kind of sexy.”

And she was his, but some part of his mind balked at the continued fantasy. It’s just a dream. Bethany threw back her head and laughed, her breasts jiggling under her shirt.

It could be real. The hopeful, horny part of him wanted to argue. To defend the lovely vision.

Like hell it is. Cold practicality crashed through his mind as the stockade gate crashed open.

Mack jerked into consciousness and scrambled to his feet, unceremoniously dumping Bethany onto the ground. He wanted to apologize, but he lost all his words as the largest Centaur he’d ever seen stalked toward them, an ugly scowl creasing his face.

“You are not welcome here, human.”

  5. I left the club high on blood and endorphins. Dancing through the parking lot toward my car, I bounced to the beat of David Guetta’s latest mix thumping from the building.

“That’s her. Biting people and shit. Crazy bitch needs to be locked up or put down.”

The meaning of the words hit me slowly. Namely when two cops nudged me into a search position along the hood of a still warm Challenger.

“No I.D.” Brisk hands moved along my ribs and down. “No anything. Blood all over her, though.”

My wrists were cuffed and I let it happen, still mellow from feeding. The urges that warped my body and mind, that pushed me to consume, drifted in silent bliss.

“C’mon, lady. In you go.” A fifteen minute ride in the back of a patrol car ended at county lockup.

Two hours of processing, flirty club clothes traded for dingy orange jumpsuit, bare feet freezing on dusty linoleum, and a corrections officer led me to a cell. I shivered and the darkness inside me stirred. It knew where to find warmth.

“I think I have to eat you.” The rhythmic rush of blood beneath skin serenaded me.

“Like hell. It is ten hours until your first appearance, lady.” The officer scrubbed a hand over his yawning face. “Just wait it out and sober up. If you’re lucky, no one will press charges.”

“Charges are the least of my worries.” Stupid fool. Idiot. Human. Food. “You really should run now.”
