Six Sentence Sunday - The Beltane Witch - Skating on a Slippery Slope

Happy Six Sentence Sunday! Thank you so much for visiting and taking the time to read this week's snippet. I really appreciate your time and the comments you leave for me. This is the last week of The Beltane Witch. Next week I'll have something new to offer you. Navy SEALs? A menage of vampires? Perhaps a little bit of dragon to tempt you? The possibilities are endless. :D

In this snippet, Sabrina has taken Darius rollerskating with her daughters and he's coming to realize there might be more to this little witch than he'd first considered.

Skating turned out to be a comedy of errors and Darius found it easier to watch from the edges of the rink than skate with Sabrina and her children. Holly and Tansy were masters at the sport and Darius grudgingly admitted admiration for their coordination. Sabrina floated like an angel across the wooden floor and he caught himself gaping like a fool. When had she become more beautiful than most of the Fae lasses with whom he’d dallied?
Watching her laugh with her children struck a chord in his chest and he rubbed a hand over his heart with a grunt. An odd mixture of yearning and hope bloomed in his chest, followed swiftly by fear and despair.

Thus comes the death of bachelorhood, and the panic of such a change. ;) There are several great authors on the Six Sentence Sunday list and a few of my favorites are Karla DoyleSarah BallanceSilver JamesZee Monodee, and Goran Zidar. Thank you for stopping by and happy reading! :)

Saturday Souvenirs: Electric Blue

Good morning, readers! Sorry I've been missing in my Saturday Souvenirs posts. It got crazy here for a while. But if I hadn't been doing anything, I wouldn't have anything to talk about. :D

Here's a little backstory (I promise, it's short). In 1989, I bought my first CD even though I didn't have a CD player to play it on. But I'd heard this great song that stuck in my head and I was determined to not only have a copy of it, but to see the band play it when they came to the city nearest my home. My best friend and I saved our pennies and bought the tickets to the Paramount Theatre in Seattle. The band? Icehouse, and their debut American album was Man of Colours. My all time favorite song of theirs, of course, was Electric Blue.

Are you hiding somewhere behind those eyes?

In that vein, when it came to buying an electric car, Mr. SM and I really wanted to find something that would suit our needs (we have children), looked relatively normal, and dealt well with summer heat (it gets really hot in Vegas). We didn't really like the Nissan Leaf because we have family in distant places and we needed a vehicle that could take us across the country if we needed to go. My folks have a Toyota Prius, but while it is a nice hybrid, it's got a big butt (I don't like big butts, and I cannot lie) and looks kinda clunky.

We didn't know if the Chevrolet Volt was even worth considering until a salesman who does a ton of travel swore by it and let us take a look at his silver Volt. It was sleek, sexy, four door, and silent. I was sold immediately. Again, we had to save our pennies (a LOT of pennies) and we had to pick a colour ;)

In the desert, you don't want to go dark, but everyone and their brother has a white or silver car. Unfortunately, all the really interesting colours, the silver topaz blue or the viridian joule (silver green) added $800 to the ticket and kinda blended into the sky. The black was, well, black and turned the car into a furnace in the sun. The crystal red was sleek, but you couldn't see the tail lights, and I prefer not to get hit, especially since you can't hear the car when it's on.

That left cyber gray metallic, which had the heat problem and looked a lot like a rolling piece of asphalt (again, the accident problem), and the blue topaz metallic. Guess which one we chose? :D

Woot! Talk a bout a sexy car! That's the official photo of it, but here's a look at it in our driveway (it's really there, you can tell by the chalk drawings on the concrete).

We loved not only the color, but the silence! All you can hear when you're driving it is the wind from the windows and the wheels against the road. That's it. Here's what it looks like in the sun.

The best part? We've driven all over the city and have used about 3 gallons of gas since we bought it. Wow.

Did you see that? 250 mpg!! *jaw drop* Thanks so much for stopping by for your Saturday Souvenirs. I hope your weekend is going well. Me, all I can say is "Road trip, baby!" If you could buy a new car, what would it be?

Winners Announcement:

Honorable Mentions

  Rafe B | @etcet
Amanda says: I’m a sucker for a good sci-fi thriller and the surprise ending gave me chills. This story very nearly won for me.

Ryan Strohman | @rastrohman
Amanda says: I can’t get enough post-apocalyptic tales and this one touched on my worst fear: fast, intelligent zombies. Yes!

@LupusAnthropos
Amanda says: Brought to mind my favorite Twilight Zone episode “To Serve Man.” Good deeds aren't always what they seem. And the last line was just great!

Week 44 Winner

Veronica Jordan | @RevolutionaryVJ

Amanda says: I love the concept of a soul-washing machine!“Humility is my favorite soap at the moment.” This is just an awesome premise and very well written.

The first time I watched that white glowing energy fill up the belly of my machine I knew what I had to do. With the click of a button and the gentle hum of the engine, I had the power to harvest and re-purpose the human soul. Humanity would no longer be a game left to chance, where money or luck could determine your fate. To think that we had based the world’s economy on things like silver and gold makes me laugh. The only truly valuable thing we have ever had is life.

The churches were the first to condemn me. They painted “No man can be God!” across my office window and set fire to my house. Then it was the rich, who demanded I accept their money as a guarantee their soul could be born again into a life of privilege. Money can do a lot of things, but it cannot scrub sin from your soul. Every bad decision, every self-serving choice is forever emblazoned there; a charcoal streak on silky white fabric. With my machine, my soul-washing machine, I can remove those marks…for a price.

Humility is my favorite soap at the moment. It can clean a soul in a single lifetime if used correctly.

There are a few who continue to fight against me. I can only laugh. Even millions of humans couldn't stop me. The machine and I are eternal, invincible. As far as I’m concerned, we are God.

Congratulations Veronica, Rafe, Ryan, and Lupus! Claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it! :)

Six Sentence Sunday - The Beltane Witch - Live Steel

Happy Six Sentence Sunday! Thank you so much for visiting and taking the time to read this week's snippet. I really appreciate your time and the comments you leave for me.

Today I'm offering more from The Beltane Witch. In this snippet, Sabrina is trying to recover from her concussion and Darius promises to take her home to rest. That's when she noticed he's missing something.

Darius set Sabrina in the back seat and climbed in beside her while Moira stepped out to sweep the windshield. Sabrina wondered where he’d put his huge sword, grateful she didn’t have to hold it for him in the car.
Oh, man, that sounds bad. Can I hold your big sword, Darius? She stifled a giggle. Thank the Goddess he can’t hear my thoughts.

Gives a whole new meaning to "live steel". ;) There are several great authors on the Six Sentence Sunday list and a few of my favorites are Karla DoyleSarah BallanceSilver JamesZee Monodee, and Goran Zidar. Thank you for stopping by and happy reading! :)

Randi says: His soup kitchen story was very descriptive and clever, with a surprise ending that had me grinning.

  Rafe B | @etcet
Randi says: Rafe's story pulled me in, first imagining a fantasy world at war - then twisting it around. It made me laugh out loud.

Nellie Batz| @solimond
Randi says: The scene at the hostel caught my attention. Dramatic and compelling, I wanted to read more.

Robin Abess | @Angelique_Rider
Randi says: The story of a lost child swapped for another was disturbing yet fascinating. A great plot and well written prose.

Week 43 Winner

Cara Michaels | @caramichaels

Randi says: A very intriguing scene, well written with a great hook. The tension between mother and daughter was palpable. Ms. Michaels has a lot of talent!

“You agreed to help him,” she said. “In any and every possible way.”

“I have. I’ve told you as much. But—”

“It’s not enough.” Hard words from a harder woman.

“You don’t know the meaning of the word.” I scowled, arms crossed. “What you’re asking of me… An energy transfer of this magnitude will kill me.”

“Please, Sasha.” She sneered. “You’re no hero and I’m not asking you to martyr yourself. Take the energy you need from another and you survive.”

“So I kill someone.”

“To save him, you stupid puritan.” She stared at me, bewildered. “Don’t act as though your hands are clean. How can one of these useless… humans be worth more to you than him?”

I’d promised myself. Humans couldn’t stop me. I had to do it for them.

“You’re fucking psychotic, Karen,” I said.

Karen Gemini smiled, and a cold pit formed in my stomach. She—the one person immune to my touch—grabbed me by the throat, slammed me tight against the wall.

“Do you think Reliant City and your goody-goody friends will welcome you back, girl? Once they know you’re Karen Gemini’s bastard daughter?”

I clawed at her hold on me, but I couldn’t take her energy.

“Oh, Sasha,” she said. “You sold your soul to the devil to deny your heritage. But you do this one thing for me and I’ll keep your dirty little secret.”

One thing. Right.

“Save your brother, Sasha.” She released me. “Or I kill everyone you love.”

Congratulations Six Time Winner Cara, David, Rafe, Nellie, and Robin! Claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it! :)

Six Sentence Sunday - The Beltane Witch - Determined House Guest

Happy Six Sentence Sunday! Thank you so much for visiting and taking the time to read this week's snippet. I really appreciate your time and the comments you leave for me.

Today I'm offering more from The Beltane Witch. In this snippet, Sabrina wakes up in the real world to a nasty headache and worried friends. She'd visited Tir na nOg, the spirit realm of the Celts, and come close to death. Darius pulled her back from the edge and agrees with her friends that she needs to go home and rest. And he'd be happy to care for her.

Irritation filtered through the pain in Sabrina’s head. “You did this on purpose…”
He froze and outrage filled his expression. “I did nothing of the sort, Ms. Foxglove. It was an accident.”
“You just want me to host the…dignitaries.”

He sounds rather offended by her assertion. Could that be because he likes the idea of getting in her house? The "dignitaries" is the Summer Queen's Court. There are several great authors on the Six Sentence Sunday list and a few of my favorites are Karla DoyleSarah BallanceSilver JamesZee Monodee, and Goran Zidar. Week 42 of #ThursThreads had some great tales! Thanks to all who entered this week. I'm honored to see all of you and read your stories. It was great to have our returning regulars and some new "faces". Great thanks also goes to judge J. Annas Walker for reading all the tales.

Winners Announcement:

Honorable Mentions

Rebecca R Kovar | @RRKovar
J. Annas says: The grieving widow is accepting condolences, outwardly doing what is expected of her. The interesting bit is all internal. The great guy everyone applauded by others for leaving his wife well off was really a monster. He fostered a monster within his wife, bringing about his downfall. It has an interesting dark twist in the end.

  Ryan Strohman | @rastrohman
J. Annas says:This is a nice bit of science fiction. It leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Two children set up an apocalyptic event just to find a guardian. It left me wondering why and what next. What are they? Aliens? Government experiments gone wrong? Something supernatural? The possibilities are endless.

David A Ludwig | @DavidALudwig
J. Annas says: The classic damsel in distress gets a new take. She runs from the bad guys after being ambushed on vacation. Her savior comes in an unlikely package, a stone Golem. The magical shoulder she cries on turns out to be her best chance for survival. It was an interesting surprise ending. I would like to know if the Golem succeeded.

Week 42 Winner

Rebecca Grace Allen | @RGraceAllen

J. Annas says: Even though there is little real action going on in the piece, there is a good sense of this woman's desperation, her intense worry over the future, and clear obsession over every word Micheal sends her. The emotional ride becomes the story. You get a notion that she is building her whole life and sense of self around words on a screen. They are no more tangible than the long distance internet relationship, but she holds them in such high esteem that she seems to suffer anxiety over them. It begs the question of the heroines sanity. I like how her neediness seems to consume her. I can't help but wonder if the relationship would last if they were to live closer. Would she suffocate him? There is enough of the character presented in such a short space to answer the question. I think so.

'Everything’s going to be okay.’

Elaine reads the words over and over again, black against white on the screen in front of her. She tries to taste every letter. Rub her fingers over them. Hear them in her mind in the soft, deep cadence of his voice she’s only heard over the phone.

‘I don’t know how to do this,’ she types back. ‘I don’t know how to be so far away from you, and still feel like I’m yours.’

But it’s not enough.

There’s no way she can put into words what presses at the edges of her rib cage, what threatens to pull her off the road when she’s paralyzed with worry that she’ll never get the chance to feel his touch.

That they’ll be stuck this way, with nothing but miles in between them, and black and white words on a screen.

She never knew they would end up here from where they started. Support in an online chat group. She was looking for help when she was sick. She found Michael.

‘I know. That’s why I’m here.’

Elaine reads. Breathes. Closes her eyes. When she opens them, she sees only words again, but this time, they are so much more. They mean everything.

‘And I’m not going anywhere.’

Congratulations Rebecca, Rebecca, Ryan, and David! Claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it! :)

Saturday Souvenirs: The Look Meme

Happy Saturday! Today I'm out at Art in the Park in Boulder City, Nevada, signing books, hobnobbing, and generally laughing with all the folks visiting the mondo-beyondo craft festival held there every October. If you're in the area (you know, Vegas, Pahrump, Henderson, Laughlin, Searchlight, or Kingman) do stop by. I'd be happy to sign a book for you. :)

In the meantime, I've been tagged by my lovely, exciting, virtual coffee buddy Karla Doyle to offer three snippets from my current work in progress containing the word look. Recently I've been working on my SEALs and I'm closing in on finishing it, but these snippets haven't been gone over with a fine toothed comb of editing yet, so I hope they're still up to snuff. :)

“How are you feeling?” the Admiral asked.
“Fine, sir.”
Surprise bloomed across two expressions; the Master Chief Castle barely blinked. Unease crept through her. She was in a hospital room…Dear God, how badly was she wounded?
“Where am I?” Chris whispered, turning to look at her Captain. “Captain?”
“You’re at Bethesda Medical Center in DC. Do you remember getting shot?”
Memory cleared and she recalled the bullet ripping through her leg. She saw Magic’s face over her again, wearing the horrible tight expression. She remembered getting so cold and feeling exhaustion set in, though she’d been fully rested the previous night.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Todd “Magic” Hunter lengthened his strides down the hallway of Bethesda Medical Center, searching for the nurses’ station to find out where they’d moved Ghost. His gut clenched at the thought that she may not have made it after all their efforts to save her. Dammit, if the stupid doctors lost her after he managed to clamp her artery shut, he’d tear this place apart.
Beside him, silent and deadly, Lieutenant Jim “Retro” Waters looked quiet enough, but Magic knew the bigger man was going out of his mind with worry. Waters was 6’4”, 230 pounds of bad ass SEAL with black hair and deep brown eyes. His face was chiseled and squared-jawed, like Robert Redford, complete with the cleft in his chin, and his eyes could bore a hole through concrete when he stared. He could be alternately scary or mysterious, projecting the Bad Boy image perfectly, and women melted at his feet, much to the other SEALs’ disgust.

He reinforced the sentiment by kissing her thoroughly, his tongue conquering hers. She tasted herself on his lips and her pussy clenched with arousal as he lowered his hard cock against her mound.
“But I have something a little more teamwork related in mind.” He spread her legs and nudged her nether lips with the head of his cock. She looked down her body and watched his hard rod disappear between her thighs as he pressed against her opening. “Permission to come aboard, ma’am.”
“Drive me hard, sailor.”
“Are you sure, LT? ’Cause I can make it sweet and slow.” He teased her lips with his head, rocking his hips seductively as he grinned.
Chris grabbed his tight ass and dug her fingers in. “If you tease me, Lieutenant, you’ll be on latrine duty for weeks. Now fuck me hard.”
“Yes, ma’am.”

In true meme fashion, I have to nominate five other authors worthy of your perusal to take the challenge: Gem Sivad, Nara Malone, Sarah Ballance, Cara Michaels, and Kris Norris. Thanks for stopping by and happy reading! :)

Honorable Mentions

Ryan Strohman | @rastrohman
George says: Ryan’s story was pretty funny, I could see the look on the faces of the cops as they stare at the monitors with that WTF moment but I also got a sense that the zombies are just around the corner heading to the booth.

  Jeffrey Hollar| @Klingorengi
George says: Those murderous mouse traps and the Rise of the House of Mouse, sorry for the Planet of the Apes reference, was downright hilarious. Those little guys are on a vendetta now.

Robin Abess | @Angelique_Rider
George says: The creep factor goes into to overload from sensory deprivation to sensory realization in Robin Abess’ story. The awwww shit meter tipped when the gargantuan menace entered. The sensory imagery was great.

Week 41 Winner

Bronwyn | @KelseyPotter13

George says: My choice for the winner of Thursday Threads is Bronwyn’s story was strong and sad. Are dad and sis werewolves too or did they watch what happened to mom only to relive it with Tobias. I felt the compassion and the sadness only to wonder what happens tomorrow.

Moondance

“What do we do now?” Sarah asked, watching as I applied pressure to the wound with a thick pad of gauze, willing the bleeding to stop.

“Do?” I repeated, looking up at her in surprise. “We find the ones who did this. They will pay.” I shifted my fingers slightly to check that no blood was soaking through the gauze. Satisfied that the bleeding had at least slowed enough that it would be safe to continue, I seized a roll of white cotton bandages and began binding the injury tightly.

“I’m not hurting you, am I?” I said anxiously, pausing briefly as I wound. “It’s not too tight?”

Tobias shook his head, his eyes round and wide and shiny behind his round glasses. “I’m okay, Daddy.”

I tied off the bandage, took my little son into my arms, and kissed his forehead lightly. “Everything’s going to be okay,” I assured him.

Tobias looked up at me fearfully. “Am I gonna turn into a werewolf now, too, Daddy?”

“I don’t know, Toby.” I held out an arm and enfolded Sarah in my embrace as well, holding my little family close—all I had left in the world. “I just don’t know.”

5 Questions of Paranormal Erotic Romance Author Shyla Colt

Welcome back to the Weird, the Wild, and the Wicked. Today I have the honor of hosting contemporary erotic romance author Shyla Colt with her newest release, Cursed! Shyla is a fellow Evernight author and I’m delighted to have her here on my blog. She is kindly offering a giveaway and an excerpt to the readers today.

Welcome, Shyla. Thank you for being with me.

What started you on the path to becoming an erotic romance author?

If I went way back I'd have to say my first paranormal romance when I was about thirteen. It was YA but it started me on the romance track. I originally wanted to write YA but when my story concepts came they were adult, and spicy as all get out.

Congratulations on your release of Cursed. Introduce us to the main characters and premise of your story.

Thank you! Colton's a man who's been unlucky in love his entire life. His family earned themselves a curse when his great-great-great grandpa wooed a witch, took her money and skipped town. Every relationship he's ever been in has ended badly so he's decided not to date at  and then he meets Avalyn. She's everything he wants in a woman, problem is she's a descendant of the witches who cursed them… talk about awkward.

Avalyn is  sassy, humorous, down to earth business woman. She and her family have moved back to Baxter to start up a small business and move back into their ancestral home. After striking out on love time after time when men find out she's a witch she's stopped looking, figuring Mr. Right will find her when the time is right. She's convinced that time has come from the moment she meets Colton. He's witty, sexy and a red head… which is her kryptonite. When she finds out just whose family he belongs to she's devastated. Why would the universe give her the perfect man and make him an Edgeworth!

These two have to work past their Hatfield/Mcoy style family vendetta's to be together. Humor, Drama and southern style romance follow abound in this romantic comedy with paranormal aspects.

Did anything in particular inspire this story?

Yes actually. An old family rumor. It's said one of my great-great's was a voodoo priestess none too keen on my grandfather marrying my grandmother so she cursed the males of their line.

Yipe! Is that what made you choose a cursed family and magic for your tale?

Yes. I'll share a little secret about writing the story. I meant this to be dark and edgy. But when the characters showed up and I laughed my butt off at their antics I knew I had no choice but to surrender. It's my first real romantic comedy style story and  I love it for that.

What other projects are on the horizon for you that we’re likely to see?

I actually have my first Young Adult book Mark of the Dragon coming out in the near future under the name Astrid Colt.  Be sure to keep your eyes out for that one if you like YA, or are looking to get the teen in your life into reading. :winks: It's got action, adventure, shifters, a dash of young love, and most importantly to me a strong female lead. I really wanted to write a heroine my daughters would think was awesome and be inspired by.

I'm also working on a military anthology I will be self publishing in November/December. Half of the proceeds will go to the wounded warrior fund. If you're looking to get a gift that will keep on giving, this will be the perfect thing. My husband is a marine and he's collaborating on this project with me in so many different ways. It's been a real dream come true, and I plan on giving an inside look at the making of it on my site. Because I want this book to be for everyone it will be my first trip into the Sweet Romance genre.

Wow, you really have a lot going on! Thank you for joining me today, Shyla, and we look forward to all your upcoming releases.

Thanks again for having me over! This was a lot of fun.

Shyla is graciously offering an e-copy of Cursed to one lucky commenter who tells her why they like paranormal romance. Please leave a valid email address or Twitter handle so we can contact you when you win. The giveaway will be open until 8 pm Thursday, October 4th, and the winner will be announced here on the blog on Friday. You must be 18 to win and please void where prohibited.

If you can't wait that long, Cursed releases on October 3rd and you'll be able to find it on Amazon, All Romance Ebooks, and Smashwords.

EXCERPT of Cursed:

She came to stand in front of him with her hands linked behind her back. She titled her head to the side and peered up at him from beneath long black lashes.
“I’ve spent the past month miserable because of a past I had nothing to do with. I’m done with that.”
He held his breath, afraid he might have misunderstood.
Her gaze met his, and her dark eyes were filled with an intense longing he knew would be mirrored in his own. His thoughts had centered on this woman day in and day out. Even now his hands itched to wind themselves in her hair as he pulled her body to rest against his own. He swallowed. The sound seemed to echo in the quiet room as he waited for her next move. Avalyn stepped closer.
“I guess what I’m trying to say is…” Her voice was a whisper of silk, low and sensual. It washed over him. She trailed the tips of two fingers from his clavicle to his chest, where she spread her palm over his heart. He lowered his lids to half-mast as arousal began to weave its wicked spell. “I’m done with that.” She leaned in closer; her body rubbed against his, burning him through the material of his clothing as she went on her tiptoes. Full lips brushed grazed his Adam’s apple, and he gasped when her tongue darted out to flicker over his pulse point.
“Tasty. I knew you would be.” Her breath was warm as it swirled over the wet path she’d created moments before, making it tingle. His head spun. How had he gone from aggressor to this? His cock hardened and strained against the zipper of his jeans. He was about three seconds from taking her on his desk.
“Yes, that’s exactly what I want.”
Her husky voice made his eyebrows shoot up toward the ceiling. Had she just read his mind?
“No, I read your eyes. I want every ounce of the lust I see in those pretty green orbs, Colton. I’ve been celibate a long time. I’m ready to be filled, ridden, and wrung out to dry. Do you think you can do that?”
Was she serious?
“Don’t worry, this isn’t a trap. You’ll find I say what I mean.”
A trail of goose bumps broke out over his body as she rocked her hips into his and nipped at his bottom lip. He groaned. Shouldn’t they talk? She issued another sharp bite. The soothing feel of her slippery tongue knocked all rational thought from his mind.
Fuck it.
He bent over to grab her thighs, and she wrapped her slender legs around his waist. Her nails scrapped across his scalp, and he grunted when she gave a light tug on his hair. “Damn, your hair is softer than I imagined it would be. It’s like red satin.”
“Isn’t that supposed to be my line?” he asked.
She laughed, a raspy sound that made his stomach quiver. “Oh, I’m an equal opportunity kind of girl.”
“God, you’re sexy.”
“Mhmm, the feeling is mutual.”
She nipped at his neck, and her nails dug into his shoulders. He hissed. The pleasurable pain made the tip of his dick harden further and leak. Damn, she’d made him wet!
“Are you trying to mark me, woman?”
“I like everyone to know when something’s mine.” She rotated her hips and purred low in her throat.
“Is that what I am?”
“Oh, yes, I think that’s what you’ve from the moment we first met.”
He opened his mouth to protest, but the rotation of her hips strangled his words in a choke hold.
“Don’t worry, Coly, the possession works both ways.”
The whispered words made something inside him snap. The need to claim what was his goaded him into action. He spun them around, bent over, and swiped the desk with his right arm. Paperwork, pens, and folders flew through the air, landing helter-skelter around the room. He placed Avalyn’s body onto the desk with a soft thud. A mewl left her lips, and she arched her back. It was obvious she enjoyed the roughness. Her eyes opened. A sinful spark smoldered in her fathomless eyes.
“Don’t worry, I won’t break.”

Thank you for stopping by and happy reading!
