Author Spotlight: Isabella Olivia Ellis, Historical Paranormal Romance Author

Good morning, dear readers. I have the great pleasure to introduce Isabella Olivia Ellis, historical paranormal romance author. Her debut is a M/F historical paranormal romance set in the late 18th century. Isabella's release, The Vampire's Bride, is from Evernight Publishing, and she's generously offered a excerpt and a giveaway. This is an erotic romance, so if that's not your cup of tea, please skip to the bottom of this post and leave a comment for Isabella.

Now, the BLURB for The Vampire's Bride:

The Vampire’s Bride, takes place in the fictional country of Scollfyld during the 18th century. A decades old prophecy deems that the countries of Scollfyld and Bernehart will be united by the marriage of the Crown Prince Sloane Vaughan (of the royal vampire family of Bernehart) and the Chosen. The Chosen is a virginal girl of noble blood from Scollfyld who was born in the year 1761. The Prophecy states that the Chosen will stand by the Prince as he unites countries and leads an empire, but stipulates that if the marriage does not happen, then the rival vampire clan of the Scarclyfs will reign. Lady Caroline Haley is selected as the Chosen, but she struggles with this. Will she accept Sloane as her husband? And will she be strong enough to withstand the danger that being the Chosen puts her in?

ADULT EXCERPT

“Sloane, may I ask a question?”
His smile widened, and she could see his fangs glinting in the candlelight.
“Of course, you needn’t have to ask.”
Gulping softly, she whispered, “Is it true? What they say about Others?”
Sloane’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, as in seduction. I’ve heard tales my whole life of vampires being able to take anyone to bed, willing or unwilling.”
Sloane straightened up. “It’s true. That is an ability my kind possesses. But I have never used it. Nor would I use it on you. I want you to want to be my wife, Caroline. I want you to be happy. The prophecy means nothing if our union is a farce.”
Caroline worried she had offended him. He looked so serious and melancholy when replying to her. Being an Other in a world filled mainly with mortals couldn’t be easy. She raised a hand and slid it behind his ear, then down his cheek. His skin felt cool to the touch, but not strange in any other way. Along his chin, she felt the coarseness of his stubble and smiled to herself. She loved this manly aspect, and she loved his words. He wanted them to be happy together. Her nervousness was slowly melting away.
Sloane leaned close to Caroline’s face. She felt his eyes lock on hers and she leaned forward a little as well. Their lips met in an open kiss, and he slipped his tongue over hers. At first, kissing Sloane was an odd sensation. Where their tongues met, his mouth felt warm, yet she still sensed an iciness. Perhaps it was his breath? It reminded Caroline of a few winters ago, when she burned her finger on a candle. Emily brought a bowl of snow for her to plunge her hand into. Only, that experience was painful, and this one was of pleasure. He ran his hand deep into her hair, tugging softly on her tresses as they pressed against each other. Slowly, she reclined into the bed, and Sloane followed her. He shifted so his body was on top of hers, and Caroline could feel the texture of his shirt on her breasts through her thin gown.
As their mouths explored each other, Sloane let his hands roam from her hair down to her body. Timidly, Caroline slid her hands from his chest and up over his back. The muscles of his lean body were strong and sinewy. One of his hands found her breast, and he lightly pinched her nipple until it hardened into a pebble. Caroline let out a slow hum of arousal. Her weakness had always been a slightly rough touch on her breasts. Sloane must have taken this as a good sign, and slid his body down so his face was level to her chest. He nuzzled the nipple of her other breast with his lips until it rose to match the first one. Then, he returned to the first and sucked it, cloth and all, into his mouth. His fingers played along her thighs and then slipped under her chemise, tracing their way up to the breast his mouth wasn’t focusing on. The combination of his skin on her bare flesh, and his mouth and the wet silk of her nipple made her arch her back in desire.
Sloane sat up on his knees and motioned for her to do the same. Caroline obeyed, and he pulled her nightgown over her head, leaving her completely naked. She could feel herself blush and cupped her hands over her soft, bare breasts.
“Don’t,” he said, taking her hands in his and lowering them to her sides. “You’re beautiful. Lay back.”
Caroline obeyed, and he leaned down and began kissing his way from her mouth, down her neck, to her breasts, and then south across her stomach. He moved himself in front of her knees, and placed a hand on each one.
“Spread your legs.” He commanded her, albeit gently.
Confused, she kept her legs together. Caroline knew it was imperative that she remain a virgin until after they were wed. Did Sloane mean to go against the Prophecy?
Smiling, Sloane shook his head. “My lady, have faith in me.”
Deciding to trust him –– after all, he would be her husband in just a few days –– Caroline opened her legs. Sloane lowered himself down between them and continued his kissing where he left off. Down the curve of her hip and then toward her cunny. She felt his hair tickle the insides of her thighs and she started to giggle, but right at that moment, his kisses landed on her there. His tongue traced from the top of her slit to where her secret hole lay. Her body tingled with the thrill of it. This was something she’d never done before, not even with Luke, for she felt it was too easy to get carried away.
Switching up the pressure, he alternated between long slow licks and short, soft kisses on her pussy. Then, he slid his tongue upwards and focused on what Caroline called her rosebud. Occasionally, in the dark of night and in the privacy of her bed, she would touch herself there until her legs tingled and her cunny tightened. As he circled his tongue and fingers on her, Caroline felt the familiar rising in her lower stomach, a sign that she was going to cum soon. She tensed her legs around his head and turned into her pillow to avoid crying out loud.
Sloane sat up as she did, and pulled her in for a deep kiss. “I must be going, my lady. I await tomorrow’s journey. I am looking forward to you seeing my homeland.”
Caroline smiled against his face. “I am as well. Good night, Sloane.”

Six Sentence Sunday - Her Devoted Vampire - Shall We Dance?

Welcome back, Sixers! Thank you so much for stopping by to read my snippet. I truly appreciate it. Since this is the last Sunday in April, this will be the last SSS snippet of Her Devoted Vampire. But don't despair, you can still find it at Smashwords, Evernight, Amazon, ARe, Bookstrand, Kobobooks, and Barnes&Noble to read it in its entirety. :)

In this snippet, Bridget has woken up after she was mugged and found herself back at the coffee shop, dressed for a night on the town. Apparently, she'd missed a date, so when Fredrick MacGregor appears, and wants to dance, who is she to say no?

Fredrick pulled her into his arms, holding her steady. Bridget had the odd sensation he protected her from more than just the floor.
“Easy now, I’ve got you and I’m here, Bridget. I’ll always be here from now on.” He hugged her like he held spun glass, laying a soft kiss on her forehead. “I’ll never leave you unprotected again, I promise you.”

*Wistful sigh* Thanks again for stopping by. I realize the Six Sentence Sunday list is long and you have many choices. Your comments mean a lot to me and I'm glad you took the time. There are some of the writers I visit Cara Bristol, Sarah Ballance, Goran Zidar, Gem Sivad, JoAnn Ross, Cate Masters, Zee Monodee, Ruthie Knox, and Silver James.

Another 200 words for #FridayFictioneers and #FridayPictureShow

Welcome back. Today I entered to #flashfiction challenges and therefore combined the two prompts to create one 200 word story. If you don't have time to read it all, the first 100 words is for the FridayFictioneers prompt hosted by Madison Woods, and the second slightly-more-than-100 came from #FridayPictureShow hosted by Jen DeSantis. This story follows the continuing WIP adventures of my werewolf twin brothers, Nik and Chayse Wolffe in Las Vegas. Lady Aislynn is the proprietor of a very "special" club.

They followed Lady Aislynn into a room, brightly lit and decorated much like a farmyard. Fence posts of weathered wood marched along one wall, strung together with barbed wire. A large coil of extra wire hung over one post, the barbs gleaming in the “afternoon” light with sinister intent. Straw had been strewn over the floor and a pitchfork stuck out of a real haystack against a barn façade.
“What exactly do you do here?” Chayse surveyed the room with disgust.
“Fantasy, Officer Wolffe, is what we do here.” Lady Aislynn gestured in a wide sweep and they spotted the other woman.
Nik grunted in surprise and Chayse bit his lips to hold in his growl.

The woman stood against the rough bark of a tree stump, with her hands restrained with thin, cotton cord. Crimson nails contrasted with her long sleeved, low-cut black t-shirt, showing enough cleavage to hide a deck of cards. Her head rested against the tree and her scarlet lips lay parted and slack.
“Is she in pain? Who did this to her?” Chayse demanded.
“Wait.” Lady Aislynn held up her hand.
A man dressed as a cowboy bandit strode into the room, spurs jangling. A Stetson shaded his eyes from the harsh light over a bandana tied around his face. One gloved hand snapped a bullwhip in the air and the woman moaned.
“Oh shit.”

Thank you for stopping by. I also want to announce the winner of Carolyn Rosewood's newest release, His Majesty's Secret.

Lyn Reynolds

Congratulations, Lyn! Have a great weekend and happy reading!

Emerald says: It was extraordinary to have the opportunity to read and consider the entries from this week's Thursday Threads. Truly. I have tended to find flash fiction challenging, so all these authors offering these beautiful pieces as though it were easy was a delight and inspiration to me! I was dazzled, really. It was obvious everyone who entered this week knows how to write. It was equally obvious to me, therefore, that these pieces would likely all resonate with various audiences.

I also want to mention, because it was so noticeable as I was reading—in every single one of these pieces, there was something that struck me. An image, a phrase, a twist. Something in all of them caught my attention particularly, making me smile, or almost cry, or breathe a bit differently.

To all of the authors who created and offered something here this week, thank you. It was an honor to read your work. Thank you, Siobhan, for offering me the lovely opportunity to act as judge today.

Winners Announcement:

Honorable Mentions

Goran Zidar | @GZidar
Emerald says: The final lines of this took my breath away. To me the piece built with a steady, economical use of words that conveyed what needed to be conveyed, nothing more, and then the simple, profound finality of the father's words closed it with perfect neatness. Beautiful.

Mark Ethridge | @LurchMunster
Emerald says: This piece juxtaposed, for me, striking images (huge castles, the squareness of the walkways) with an intriguing premise. The intrigue was even layered—I was interested in the narrator's response to holding Rose's hand in the first paragraph, and then by the description of the place where they were, and then by the narrator's dialogue. Then the last line provided even an unforeseen increase in the suspense, making for a simultaneous climax and finality that left me captivated. Very impressive for so few words!

Toni Wyatt | @Toni1777
Emerald says: The description here drew me in right away and kept my attention on alert. I found the image of the ravine and the idea of its being there with so many other unknown vehicles stark—and then the final section both surprised and struck me. Nicely done.

Week 20 Winner

Emerald says: The tone and imagery here somehow worked together to seem virtually flawless to me. What the author managed to convey in so few words about where she was, the allusion to why, what it looked like, that she was an artist, what she made, and what for—all with such gentleness and beauty—blew me away. I was doubly struck by the last line, which surprised me because I was already so enthralled. I found this piece exquisite.

Memorial

Mae stepped off the road and onto a barely discernible path of weedy groundcover edged by tough grasses and wild strawberries. They were no good for eating, which suited her just fine. After six weeks restoring the first bit of the family farm to some functionality, Mae needed a reminder of why she’d once loved the old place.

She turned the corner and came to her favorite place. Vines climbed over and through the wrecks of old machinery, covered stacks of rusted blades and bits of wood torn from buildings that had fallen years ago, snaked their way to the top of the heap, then bloomed entwined with rolls of barbed wire.

Grandpa Jack had loved the chaotic heap. Mae’s father considered it garbage. Mae had seen art waiting to be created from found objects with bits of memory attached. Even now, with the bulldozer pushing last of the decrepit outbuildings into a pit, she could not bring herself to destroy this little pile of history.

She pulled out a piece of barn board and wiped off the dirt, then freed a bit of rusted metal. Fifteen minutes later, she had a very basic block carving. This one would not be used to make prints for her next show. With wire snips, she twisted a bit of barbed wire, then hung it on the tree that had somehow managed to survive being surrounded by decay. It was a much better monument than a cold stone in a manicured cemetery.

Congratulations Rebecca, Goran, Mark, andToni! Claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it! :)

Pass on the great news on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, shiny mirrors, Morse Code, and signal flags. Check out all the stories here and I hope to see you all back next week for #ThursThreads. :)

Reviews, Reviewers, and Gratitude

There has been an ongoing battle between reviewers and authors pretty much since there have been books written, and like most things, everyone has an opinion. As the title of this post suggests, I want to talk about reviews, (professional) reviewers, and the art of gratitude, particularly on the author's part. There's nothing snarky in putting professional in parentheses, I just want to differentiate them from those who review on Amazon or Goodreads, rather than having their own blog to talk about books.

For the author, writing is a joy, and often we put our hearts and souls into our stories. We know, intellectually, that not everyone is going to like them, but hope springs eternal in the desire that the majority of public opinion will be favorable. I've heard many authors get really nervous before a release because they fear the book will flop, or the reviews will be devastating. It's hard to hear someone doesn't like it, or really doesn't like it, or hates it.

One thing to remember about negative reviews on Amazon or Goodreads is that they are someone's opinion, perhaps with an ulterior motive, but still an opinion. And as a author, you can only write the best story for you. YOU are who you must impress. Not the public (even though we hope). Stick to that and the bad reviews won't hit as hard.

The other thing to remember about negative reviews from places like Amazon and Goodreads is not to interact with the reviewer, even when their words set your blood afire and make you want to throw grenades at them. LOL I know the feeling, but to engage with them is to only start a war that makes authors and reviewers take sides, and then the anger blossoms until it's out of control. Read the negative review or don't, but let it go as not their cup of tea. You can't please everyone. Some folks just have an agenda or are having a bad day, and you just happen to be their target that moment.

With professional reviewers, it's a little different. I have a friend who is a professional reviewer. She has her own blog where she puts up her reviews, and her reviews tend to be well-written and well-thought out. I asked her once about gratitude and reviews, and she gave me some good pointers about how to interact (as an author) with a professional reviewer.

  1. If you have asked a reviewer to review your book, and they give you a favorable review, thank them privately for their time and review, not on the blog where they reviewed it, then post and tweet the link to the review. This allows you to express your gratitude for their time without looking like you've bribed them.
  2. If you requested a review and it came back negative or awful, thank them privately for their time. That's it. Simple. "Thank you for your time reviewing my book." Don't apologize for them not liking it, and don't go on your own blog and blast them. Just nod, smile, say thanks, and cry on your best friend's shoulder in private. No need to drag this into public.
  3. If the review is unsolicited, like through your publisher or the reviewer picked it up on whim, and it's wonderful, the best way to thank the reviewer is to post the link on Facebook or Google Plus, and tweet it on Twitter like this: "Did you see this great review on [title of book]? Check it out" and post the link. This will bring people to the reviewer's site (which helps them) and drums up interest in your book, which helps you.
  4. If the review is unsolicited and it's awful, do nothing except cry on your best friend's shoulder in private. It's hard to take and you want to scream in reaction, but you just have to let it go, and you don't have to direct anyone to the bad review. Bite your tongue and move on. Anything else just incites the battles we've seen recently between reviewers and authors.

An attitude of gratitude really helps in these situations. Treating people, yourself included, with respect works out the best. Especially since you put your work out there specifically to get noticed, to entertain, and to share. If you didn't do it for these reason, why are you publishing?

I've gotten a few 1 star reviews and they're heartbreaking, but I realized that it's not about me, the story just didn't do it for that person. I try to write the best story I can for myself. Do I believe in the characters? Are their actions convincing to me? Do I love them for all their flaws and perfections? If I can answer yes to those questions when I'm writing, then I've accomplished what I set out to do: Write the best story I could for me. I can't please everyone, but if I can please myself, I'm on the right track.

I'm grateful for every good review I get, and it always warms my heart when someone likes my book(s). If you've read Her Devoted Vampire and liked it, I'm grateful.

Thanks for stopping by and happy reading! :)

Author Spotlight: Carolyn Rosewood, Erotic Romance Author

Good morning, dear readers. I have the great pleasure to introduce Carolyn Rosewood, erotic romance author. She's recently become a Siren author and her newest release is a M/F romance set in an alternate universe that mirrors our Medieval period in history. Carolyn is a multipublished author of all kinds of erotic romance. Her release, His Majesty's Secret, is from Siren Publishing, and she's generously offered a excerpt and a giveaway. This is an erotic romance with mild BDSM, so if that's not your cup of tea, please skip to the bottom of this post and leave a comment for Carolyn.

Now, the BLURB for His Majesty's Secret:

When his half brother Austin declares himself King, Crown Prince Dalmas of Ashdowne is forced to flee his castle or be put to death for treason. On his way to find proof Austin's claims are false, he prevents the imminent sexual assault of a beautiful young woman, killing Castle Guards in the process.

Fleeing a forced betrothal, Ravenna LoPresti of Wythmail finds herself a reluctant companion to sexy, lustful Dalmas on his journey to find the truth and win back his rightful Crown. While Austin and his Guards chase Dalmas, a Royal Proclamation declares a price on Ravenna's head as well.

Dalmas and Ravenna awaken each other's sexual desires, but will lust and growing love keep them together, even if they find the proof Dalmas needs? Or will Ravenna be forced to return to her kingdom and marry the Count, or be put to death for a murder she didn't commit?

ADULT EXCERPT

Ravenna didn’t realize she was crying until he brushed away her tears. When his mouth found hers again, she didn’t hesitate to return his kiss. He partially unlaced her dress, his fingers trailing down her spine, white-hot against her skin. His tongue flicked down her neck and across one shoulder, then the other.
She reached for his tunic, but he caught her hands and pinned them to her sides. “Me first,” he whispered, a wicked grin on his face.
“Am I not to move, Highness?” Ravenna shivered as he held her wrists firm.
“Keep your hands at your side, or I’ll put you over my knee.”
She couldn’t help the moan that escaped her lips as he gently pushed the dress over her breasts and arms until the fabric reached her wrists. She held her arms still, although the thought of moving them so he’d follow through on his threat to spank her sent waves of desire straight to her pussy.
He knelt in front of her and took her breasts in his hands, pushing them together. When he ran his teeth and tongue over her nipples as he had earlier by the stream, she cried out, clenching her thighs together. She was so close to an orgasm all she had to do was move the right way. Did he know? Was he doing this on purpose, making her wait? “Dalmas, please.”
He looked up, his eyes smoky with lust. “You’re very impatient, girl of Wythmail.”
When he smacked her on the left ass cheek, she yelped, more from surprise than anything. She barely felt his hand through the fabric of the skirt, but her pussy became so wet her juices started to trickle down her thighs.
He returned his attention to her nipples, and she had to dig her nails into her palms to keep from grabbing a fistful of his hair to push his mouth closer. The thought of a spanking competed with her desire to see what else he had planned for her.
“You may move your arms, but only to allow the dress to fall.” He pushed the fabric down to her ankles. “Now keep your arms at your sides again or you’ll get more of this.” He smacked her hard, once on each ass cheek.
Oh, Stars of Rohesia. “Dalmas, please...” She looked into his handsome face to find him grinning.
“Am I to understand you like that, Ravenna?”
She was grateful for the low light, for she knew a fierce blush covered her face. “Yes,” she whispered.
“I shall have to remember that.” He stood and retrieved a blanket, which he spread on the ground in front of her. “Move your legs apart a bit.”
She did as he asked. His tongue traced a line of liquid fire over her abdomen then down to her wetness, flicking her clit, teasing. Her palms became damp and numb from pressing them against her hips to keep from moving. Incomprehensible sounds escaped her throat. His tongue alternated between lapping inside her pussy and flicking her clit until she was ready to explode. She’d reached the point where she couldn’t take anymore when he took her entire clitoris into his mouth and sucked hard, slipping two fingers inside her at the same time.
She screamed and dug her hands into his hair, grinding her hips into his face as an intense orgasm spread through her, shocking her with wave after wave of hot fire. It went on for long minutes. Even her legs trembled.
He lowered her to the blanket and laid her face down, then took her arms and put them over her head, holding both wrists with one strong hand, just as he had the first day.
“I told you not to move,” he said, a smile in his voice.
She tensed in anticipation. He spanked each cheek several times and it stung, but it also sent a flood of desire through her like nothing ever had. He let go of her wrists, and she heard the rustle of clothing.
“Please, Dalmas. Let me touch you. Let me see you.”
“Not tonight. You’re being punished.”
He wrapped his tunic loosely around her wrists. “Tell me if this is too tight. I don’t wish to harm you.”
Ravenna could barely catch her breath. Another orgasm was building, and all he’d done was spank her and bind her wrists with a piece of cloth from which she could easily break free.
He massaged her ass, smacking her every so often, though not as hard as before. He reached around and played with her nipples, then slipped a hand underneath to stroke her clit. She tried to grind into his hand, but with her arms overhead all she could do was lie there and let him take control. It was exhilarating to give into him, and it left her dizzy with anticipation and desire.
“You’re so beautiful, Ravenna. If we were at the castle, we’d never leave my bed.”
She moaned and writhed, trying to bring on her climax. Finally she felt his cock tease the opening to her wetness, circling it, prodding ever so slightly then withdrawing. He kept one hand under her, and when he suddenly plunged inside, she let out a scream as a strong orgasm rocked her.
He thrust slowly, forcing her to slow down and wait for him. Both hands reached under to cup her breasts. His thrusting gradually increased until finally he pistoned in and out with speed she wouldn’t have thought possible. His breath was hot on her back, and when she came again, he joined her, his spasms going on for long moments.
